THE INSTITUTE GENERAL INFORMATION

The Institute is housed at the main campus of the Szent István University in Gödöllő, situated 30 kilometers east of Budapest. The city of Gödöllő is the center for many agricultural agencies and enterprises, and the University is a popular choice for students interested in agriculture and management of natural resources.

The Institute for Wildlife Conservation was founded in 2007 by the senate of Szent István University. Its legal predecessor was the Department of Wildlife Biology and Management formed from the Wildlife Biology Research Station of the Gödöllő University of Agricultural Sciences in 1994. The Institute belongs to the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and its objectives are to:

  • Educate wildlife biology and management, and basics of forestry at the graduate level, and wildlife management at postgraduate level programs. The results of research are transferred through formal graduate and postgraduate - including Ph.D. - teaching. Students can choose from a wide selection of wildlife biology and management courses. Each year several of them prepare M.Sc. theses at the Institute.
  • Conduct a wide range of research programs basic to the management of wildlife resources. The Institute emphasizes research related to specific management problems where results have a high probability of being applied. The long-term wildlife management effort emphasizes a diversity of applied management problems important for the Hungarian wildlife/game management organizations.
  • Provide technical and scientific assistance to the governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations, which are important in improving management of the wildlife resources.

We must achieve these objectives with a staff of 21 people. In its own building, the Institute has a library of >2,000 professional books and journals, a fully equipped lecture room, two labs (chemistry and histology), as well as a LAN and Wireless Network.
